Breaking News:George Clooney doesn't mind getting old

George Clooney doesn't mind getting old

George Clooney has revealed that he has no qualms about getting older.

The 48-year-old Hollywood heartthrob, who is presently dating Italian TV presenter Elisabetta Canalis, made the revelation while poking fun at his perceived older image.

“I’m old. I’m kind of comfortable with getting older because it’s better than the other option, which is being dead. So I’ll take getting older,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“It’s an interesting thing to be able to watch yourself grow older on screen. I was watching Up In The Air and I thought, ‘Jesus, who’s the old, grey-haired guy?’ And it was me.

“I never wear make-up for movies and now it’s starting to show. It’s funny because earlier in my career I was working with a lot of actresses who were my age or older and most actors work with actresses who are considerably younger.

“So people always thought I was older anyway and I’ve been going through this thing with people thinking I’m about 60,” he added.

Actress Asin Thottumkal, who's lately been working round-the-clock, has been admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital here following an acute sinus condition.

The "Ghajini" fame actress was admitted on Monday morning. She was taken to Kokilaben hospital because it's close to her home in Andheri.

Though the actress herself was unavailable for comment, her father, who was with her in the hospital, said: "Yes she's in hospital. Nothing to worry about. All this is part of the process of my daughter's growing up."

Asin is expected to be out after treatment in a couple of days. But the news of her hospitalisation on Eid was being whispered behind closed doors. Some said she was admitted after suffering from acute exhaustion.

"Asin was admitted to the Dhirubhai hospital... not for exhaustion but an acute sinus condition. She had been neglecting the condition for quite some time now. But now the sinus situation had to be attended to. But she was in great spirits, her usual chirpy and friendly self singing even as her treatment was being done," said a source close to Asin.

Her condition got aggravated because of the night shooting for "London Dreams".

"She had no choice but to get into the hospital to have the condition treated. She waited until Eid when there was break from work," said the source.

Depp may quit Pirates after Disney ousts studio chief

Johnny Depp may walk away from a fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" after Disney ousted the veteran studio chief who first backed his vision for the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Los Angeles Times reported.

Studio chief Dick Cook left the company on Friday following a string of disappointing box office results and the studio's failure to consistently create popular films for the crucial teenage audience. Disney recently paid $4 billion to buy Marvel Entertainment and gain control of its stable of superheroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man and the X-Men.

Depp said he was "shocked and very sad" about the ouster of Cook, who started at Disney 38 years ago as a tour bus operator.

He told the Los Angeles Times that he only agreed to participate in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" because of Cook. The three movies in the series have already grossed some $2.8 billion worldwide and Disney announced a fourth installment last week to be called on "Stranger Tides".

But given Depp's iconic role in the series, his departure could spell a death knell for the money-spinning franchise.

"There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment," Depp said. "He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust. I consider Dick a friend in an insane system."

Hollywood star John Travolta is in the Bahamas and is ready to be the first witness in an extortion case linked to his 16-year-old son's death.

Travolta heads the 14-member witness list against the defendants - a former Bahamas senator and an ambulance driver who allegedly threatened to release a document related to the treatment of his son Jett. He is expected to appear in the court on Tuesday, reported people.com.

The two have pleaded not guilty and are out on bond.

This is Travolta's first visit to the Bahamas since his son died last January after suffering a seizure at the actor's vacation home on the island of Grand Bahama.

Anoushka complains of blackmail, Mumbai-based man arrested

Delhi Police is investigating a case of blackmailing of young sitarist and legendary musician Pandit Ravi Shanker's daughter, Anoushka and has arrested a Mumbai-based man who allegedly accessed her photographs stored in her laptop.

The man, whose identity has not been revealed, has been arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police following investigations in Mumbai after Ravi Shankar approached police last month complaining about the harassment meted out to his daughter, a senior police official said.

Police had last week registered a case under Section 386 of Indian Penal Code which relates to extortion by putting in fear of death or hurt and provides for a maximum punishment of 10 years in jail.

The official said the musician, who lives in the US, has told police that Anoushka had given her laptop to a service centre in south Delhi in February.

"We think that the material in the laptop was copied by someone. We interrogated the staff at the Apple Services Centre. Later, we zeroed in on the Mumbai-based man and arrested him," he said.

The man allegedly sent a series of e-mails to 28-year-old Anoushka, demanding money for not making public the photographs. The alleged blackmailer even asked for USD one lakh in one e-mail.

Police did not state as to when the man was arrested.

Beyonce to perform in Malaysia despite dress code

Beyonce Knowles says she will perform in Malaysia in October, two years after canceling a show in this Muslim-majority country after protesters threatened to disrupt the concert because of her sexy image and clothing.

The R&B superstar's upcoming show is already drawing the ire of conservatives in this country, where female performers are required to cover up from the shoulders to knees with no cleavage showing.

Knowles said on her Web site that she will take the stage at a stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's biggest city, on Oct. 25. "Beyonce for the first time ever has decided to make Malaysia part of her 'I am.' World Tour," her Web site said.

Knowles canceled a planned concert two years ago following protest threats by Malaysia's opposition Islamic party. At the time her talent agency said the show was called off due to a scheduling conflict.

Instead she went to Indonesia, which has less stringent rules about how performers should dress and behave.

Sabki Yusof, youth vice head of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, said Sunday that they would send a protest note to the government over the concert. He said it was the government's "responsibility to protect the people of Malaysia" from what he described as immoral Western influences.

"We are not against entertainment as long as it is within the framework of our culture and our religion," Sabki said. "We are against Western sexy performances. We don't think our people need that."

He said besides the protest note, the party had no plans so far to disrupt the concert. Organizers for Beyonce's October show could not immediately be reached for comment.

Artists such as Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani have performed in Malaysia under similar protest threats by conservative Muslims, forcing the artists to don attire that revealed little skin.

In the most recent controversy, the government late last month at first barred, then reversed the order forbidding Muslims from attending a Black Eyed Peas concert because it was sponsored by a beer company. With the ban lifted Muslims can now watch the U.S. hip-hop stars at a theme park near Kuala Lumpur on Sept. 25.

In family and personal matters, Muslims, who make up two-thirds of Malaysia's 28 million people, are governed by Islamic law, which forbids the consumption of alcohol. The laws do not apply to non-Muslims.

Lankan director plans Bollywood film with 'saleable' stars

If things go according to his plan, maverick filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara may become the first Sri Lankan to direct a Bollywood movie.

"I am exploring a mainstream Indian film that will have saleable stars and other commercial elements but will be made completely in my own style," says the Camera d'Or winner in Cannes for his debut film "A Forsaken Land" in 2005.

"The screenplay is currently being developed and talks are on with a production company," says the 32-year-old Pune film institute-trained Jayasundara.

His directorial style is marked by verbal sparseness and deep cinematic layering, two attributes that are alien to the standard Bollywood brand of storytelling.

"But the two poles can definitely come together to create something interesting," he says.

He understands Hindi and language would not pose a problem for him. "Sinhalese is rather close to Hindi. I am surprised that no Lankan filmmaker has ever attempted to make a Hindi film before," he says.

Jayasundara, who shuttles between Paris and Colombo, is attending the 34th Toronto International Film Festival with his second feature "Between Two Worlds", a visually stunning and characteristically multi-layered parable about the doomed connection between youth and violence.

about amitabh bachchan

Susmita Dasgupta finds Amitabh Bachchan an interesting subject to study. Here, she decodes the superstar, the subject of her PhD and a book

Is there an Amitabh ‘before’ and ‘after’ ABCL?
There is definitely a before and after ABCL Amitabh. The ABCL tragedy, like all stupendous failures have split Amitabh into a before and after image. The trauma of having failed appears to have drastically changed the person whose image was that of the invincible.

What is Amitabh, the husband, like?
As I could observe, and at that point of time I was nearly 20 years younger, that Amitabh and Jaya were ideologically apart. For Jaya, there was a distress about why Amitabh did the films that he did. Jaya would have loved it were Amitabh to remain in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee camp and graduated later to Satyajit Ray (Manik Kaku for her; Jaya is exceptionally well-connected). But Amitabh went into rather "cheap stuff" with which she was not comfortable. To the best of my mind, this was the basic reason for a kind of stand-off. Jaya and Amitabh were dutifully husband and wife but I felt that the romance in the marriage was lacking. Also Jaya is a ‘Bong’ woman, the oldest among three sisters, and most probably the brightest, daughter to a doting father and that too an important one. She is Bhaduri, an upper caste Barendri Brahmin, who are very proud people. But slowly as Amitabh got involved in his career, he himself became the centre of all attention which was very difficult for Jaya to swallow. After all, at the time of their marriage she was the star and he the also-ran. The change in the power position within the marriage as Amitabh became successful also changed the soft, intense and emotional romance which Jaya and Amitabh had.

How is the superstar with his kids? Is his rapport different with Abhishek and Shweta?
With his children, Amitabh is doting, pampering, blind with affection and only pretending to be firm, but very interested to be a part of their lives and eager to go to any lengths for their well-being. The daughter is interesting, I am not so sure that she feels the same way towards her parents as they feel towards her. I get this strange feeling that Shweta is seeking to move out of her parents’ very doting shadow and that marriage helped her have some independence that her extra protective parents robbed her of. Abhishek loves and would love to continue to be under the parents’ protection.

What about the Rekha episode? Is there reason to believe the affair happened, despite Amitabh’s denials?
Yes, it is a matter of great speculation for me as well. I always sided with Amitabh when he denied all on Rekha. But, only recently, I saw this television footage in which Amitabh suddenly got up and moved away as Rekha came near where he was seated. This makes me believe that yes, they did have an affair. The sudden getting up and moving away was a giveaway. It was almost a pose of fleeing from Rekha... why would a man want to do that if he is not guilty of something? I believe Amitabh knew from day one that he wasn’t serious about Rekha. Also, he’s very, very class conscious... Rekha was perhaps an ego trip.

How do you think Abhishek fares, being Amitabh and Jaya's son, and now Aishwarya’s husband?
Abhishek reminds me of Prince Salim and he has the Prince Salim syndrome. In today’s world, Abhishek’s appeal lies in a certain sense of being chaperoned, someone who seeks and has security and, on the basis of an assured lifestyle, can afford to be nice to one and all. Just as Amitabh’s image crashed with failure, Abhishek's image can crash if the shadows of persons chaperoning him are taken away. The image contains the shadows of the biggies that he nests among.

Was he behind Abhishek joining films?
Yes, he was totally behind Abhishek's joining films and if I were to have my opinion, then to push him to cinema. That’s why I say that Abhishek is prince Salim, the reluctant heir of Akbar when his heart was away in Venice, Rome and even Spain.

Amitabh is projected today as the loyal friend... what drives his friendships with the Anil Ambani and Amar Singh?
I feel that Amitabh has never been a loyal friend. Loyalty has never been his characteristic trait. Anwar Ali and Amjad Khan are at least two who Amitabh never even acknowledged. I have seen him rather stand-offish with Javed, Salim, Prakash Mehra, the persons who made him. Amitabh never attended Hrishida’s funeral. He refuses to acknowledge Desh Mukherjee or Tinnu Anand. So, he looks for friends as far as he has something to gain from them.

The Amar Singh episode is strange. He must be really gaining something out of Anil Ambani and Amar Singh and that “gain” has some connection with the “loss” in terms of money.

Why do you think he is still working? Is it insecurity, to consolidate a space for Abhishek or love of acting?
Amitabh is still working, yes, what you suggest to consolidate Abhishek’s career, but to the best of my understanding, Amitabh is Bhishma, he wishes to prove that he is immortal as a star. I think that Amitabh is seeking immortality by constantly reinventing his image to suit each new age that he lives in.
